The "acclaimed" Nick Ward

Sorry I haven't been posting much - it's been all go here at the Wood of Kings. So what's been happening? Well a lot. But I have something really exciting to share with you. I'm in line for an Oscar. It's  a very long line and I will be bumped to the back at any time but - to hell with it - I'm going to crow while the crowing's good.

The little short film I wrote - Das Tub - that was directed and produced by the very clever James Cunningham and his team at the Media Design School has won best short short at the Apsen Shortfest in Colorado. This is considered one of the world's top film festivals.

Winning this award means that we qualify to be considered for the Oscars. Yeah baby! You can read all about it here.

Okay yes I know this doesn't mean we're even in contention for an Oscar but blow me down if it isn't great to be breathing such rare air even for the briefest of fleeting moments.

  1. You go girl.... or similar Americanism of support. I say that's as good as getting nominated. Dust off your frock and buy a ticket to LA. :) Well done! See you at Mike and Virginia on 1st May. Tanya X

  3. Holy crap! How exciting!

So -- Aspen, Colorado. Will you fly to the States? I'm in Minnesota, a mere 18 hours' drive. We could meet for a drink. :-)

California, now. Hmm. That's a drive. I'll have to break our date, but will owe you the drink. :-)

  6. Nick, I just read your comment on Calvin's blog. I've been writing a series of posts for the A-Z challenge on bullying, mostly related to workplace, but tomorrow is regarding schools. I also touch on dyslexia and learning difficulties at both blogs. I was delighted to hear that you celebrated the teacher who supported you, but not surprised that they got rid of him. A lot of teachers and schools are terrified of, and intimidated by creativity.

Congratulations on the win at the Apsen Shortfest, and the Oscar nomination. Crow long, crow loud, and deafen any teacher who was obstructive ;) Sue@JumpingAground (Alliteration & drabbles)

  7. That is awesome news. Try to remember us little people when you go 'Hollywood' buddy. I am excited for you. Usually it is just an honor to be nominated but WINNING must put you in a whole different headspace.

  8. Kal and Sue. Thank you wonderful people. Just to be clear I haven't actually been nominated for an Oscar but I'm now in a category where I am actually eligible. As I said it's a rare air. Not bad for a kid who spent most of his childhood being labelled a "dumbie."

  9. Ah Nick, I had no idea that you had teacher issues. I now feel a wall between us given that I am formerly a teacher myself. I saw you speak last night, thanks for doing a Script to Screen. :) I was there mentoring my student protege in my capacity as his former teacher and now good friend :) See, we are not ALL evil. (cackle, stir cauldron).
When do we next see you at an Auckland even given that you won't be at the theatre to take a bow on the 1st of May? And I may not check this blog in a timely fashion so feel free to email direct on tanya@snakefang.co.uk
By the way, been meaning to say since last time I checked out your blog, that you are a GIFTED artist and craftsperson, in fact going to have to invent a new term for you - gifted craftist. I loved some of the drunken photos and the finish you put on them really worked. I am still envious of weapons of miniscule destruction and want to give one to my brother for his birthday. But alas, I lack the frame, glass, small rifles, white enamel spraypaint... and also it would be artistic plagiarism. If you ever make one on commission.... call me! Tanya XX
